THOKOZANI has a massive soundtrack. Together the songs capture a moment in time: traditional beats mashed up with hiphop and reggae; a new generation of voices; a legion of politically and culturally engaged artists overflowing with innovation.
ATUMWI are a dynamic duo who fuse traditional vibes with cutting edge hiphop into what they call Sendeza Analysis. “Pamtima,” which means “in the heart,” is full of clever rhymes, crafty lyrics and good ol’ entendre. Lisen to: Pamtima.
LUCIUS BANDA is the godfather of Malawi music, not to mention the country’s most famous politician. It is impossible to talk about music in Malawi without mentioning Soldier, as he’s known in music circles. Banda, who releases his new album in December ’09, not only contributes two songs to the soundtrack, but he also has a cameo in the film. Listen to Moyo Wanga and Icho Chikondi.
THE BASEMENT are known as pioneers of Malawian hiphop. Their songs are catchy, smart and impossible not to love. Check these guys out on Facebook or Myspace. Listen to: Moyo Ulipo.
THE NAMELESS are one of the biggest names in Malawi hiphop. Their song China is currently among the most popular songs in the country. Part Nas and part 2Pac, The Nameless represent everything that I love about hiphop. Listen to Back in the Day.
PATRICK LUPIA plays keyboards in Balaka’s own Zembani Band. As a solo artist, his music absolutely and without exception must be danced to. I had the good fortune of shooting the music video for Kudzigulira Malo.
More music coming soon.
